Flying Pig & Elstree Helicopters are going on tour! – Join us on our epic flying school 5 day trip around the UK #HelisOnTour
Excitement was aplenty last week as we prepared the Heli’s, all serviced and ready to go; routes mapped out and destinations finalised as this week sees the arrival of the hotly anticipated ‘Around the Uk Tour’
4 Helicopters have taken to the sky and are making their way around our green and pleasant land!
Arranging the trips is my favourite aspect of my job as Student Liaison manager. From the initial concept and planning, to the early morning meeting on the day of the trip when all of the Pilots and students come in to plan; there is a sense of the magic that is to come. It is when all of the students hard work pays off! They not only practice their flying, they also do some complex radio work and navigate to a wonderful destination, such as Le Touquet. It really is an amazing achievement for them and is the culmination of all their hard work training. I regularly arrange day trips throughout the year, the biggest up until this week being 6 helicopters and 18 crew going off for a Christmas Dinner in a rather fabulous location!
When Paul (Captain White, our Company Founder) and I discussed doing an Around the UK Tour last year, it did seem like quite an undertaking! I started by googling hotels with helipads, got a rough idea of possible destinations from him and Neil (Capt.Day) and bit by bit the jigsaw fell into place. We added Fuel stops, additional Landing sites and last, but by no means least I booked some rather beautiful accommodation for our intrepid adventurers and some rather tasty meals!
On Monday morning this week the excitement was palpable as rucksacks and Pilot Bags at the ready, the students came together at last, adrenaline fueled for the adventure to come. Seeing them all take off in convoy safely on their way, was a thrill; but not quite as much as the day was for them! They were soaring high above the most gorgeous scenery the UK has to offer. They flew around the southern coast via the Isle of Wight and Land’s End, finally reaching ‘Rock’ in Cornwall where they caught a tiny ferry over the Camel Estuary to Padstow! A night at the majestic Harbour Hotel was a rather special place to rest their weary heads after a day’s flying!
Knowing that the first day had been a huge success was just rewards, though the 89 pictures I received from the snap happy travellers proved the point! Day 2 saw us head up to Wales, so sites a plenty! With Fuel stops at Bodmin and Kemble followed by the spectacular views of the Snowdonia National Park, the photos continued to come in thick and fast to the trip What’s app group! We completed the days flying with a competition for a picture of Caernarfan Castle! Our tired, but happy team, arrived in time for a relaxing evening and some flight planning over a meal of Welsh lamb at Plas Dinas Country House!
Day 3 will see the team fly along the west coast, over the Lake district to Cumbria and the splendour of Warwick Hall! The plan for Day 4 is to fly up to Scotland, landing at Oban and Perth, before we fly over spectacular Edinburgh and down over the Northumberland National Park for a night at stately Eshott Hall!
Day 5 is the return leg to Elstree, full of tales of an amazing adventure; priceless flying experience to aid them on all their future flying and some new friendships made. This really will be the best trip ever and funnily enough I have already started the list of those champing at the bit to go next year – any takers?!
