F is for Free Ground School and making learning Fun – As Luther Vandross said “The best things in life are free” and our bi-weekly Ground School is no exception!
When you embark on the journey of gaining a PPL (H) the fear of the unknown is very rarely the flying, which has the fun factor, It is usually the thought of having to sit some challenging exams!
Here at Elstree and Flying Pig Helicopters, our founder Capt Paul White, came up with the ingenious idea of a Ground school evening. It is as a way of bringing all of our lovely students of all ages and from all walks of life to come together and talk all things Helicopters! Either Paul or instructor/examiner Neil Day will lead the evening with our chosen subject that week: It is a brilliant way to learn, bouncing ideas of each other, so many of the students continue to come along once they have passed and share the benefits of their wisdom. The evenings are not restricted to the 9 subjects in the curriculum, we also do some hands on evenings in the hanger doing checks on the heli’s, go up to the Control Tower to talk to the FISO on duty, have navigation competitions or discuss how to use a piece of technology such as Sky Demon.
Overlooking the airfield and surrounded by maps and all the information you could need, there is no better place to study; add in some very enthusiastic Captains and the students just starting or working their way through and the camaraderie is something to behold and be part of. We eat pizza and celebrate each others achievements, birthdays and any other milestone – any excuse!
Helicopter flying schools are not known for their socials as fixed wing are; this tends to be because fixed wing have many private owners part sharing an aircraft. At Flying Pig we have over come this difference by running our free Ground School, which is a great bonding and social activity. We also allow our PPL (H)’s once they have passed their skills test and obtained a licence, to Self Fly Hire our helicopters for days out, so often 2 of them will go of and split the flying on a fun trip. We run Open Days when students can pop in and talk to new potential students and last, but by no means least we have the Student trips! The trips are a perfect way to let off steam and fly somewhere fabulous with your new likeminded friends, creating memories whilst practising your flying and navigation.
